Applications are typically submitted directly to schools, usually online. Most schools will require your child's transcripts, a copy of their passport, and a one-time registration fee, which will be submitted with the initial application. They may also require students to take entrance exams such as UKiset or ISEB. PrepWorks provides comprehensive support for families—from finding suitable schools to preparing and submitting applications.
It would be best to start with competitive boarding schools that mostly require registrations to be submitted two years ahead of entry year especially for Year 9 entry. Thus, we recommend starting planning 18 - 24 months in advance.
Children may get into boarding school from the age of 7/8 in Prep School. However, most of the students from Malaysia will typically seek to start in Year 9 (about 13 years of age) or Year 12 (about 16 years of age). The best entry point really depends on the child's readiness and why the child is going to study there.
The majority of schools will expect students to take either UKiset or ISEB which is the pretest that is normally required to sit prior to advancing to the next stage of application. Standard 13+ entrance exam would be English and Maths. 16+ entrance exam subjects depend on students chosen A-Level/IB subjects. Some schools also require students to take the CAT4 test as part of the exam.
Most entrance exams can be taken at PrepWorks in TTDI, or at the British Council (mix of online and paper based exam). For Wycombe Abbey and Westminster, they will require 16+ candidates to travel to the UK for the assessment.
Annual tuition fees are approximately £40,000 to £55,000 (around RM240,000 to RM330,000), depending on the school. Parents also need to budget for other expenses such as uniforms, textbooks, extracurricular activities, and guardianship services.
Yes, many boarding schools offer scholarships in areas such as academics, music, and sports. While these scholarships can be competitive, PrepWorks can guide you in finding suitable scholarship opportunities and help your child prepare application materials and interviews.
The typical UK school year begins in September and ends in July next year, and is divided into three terms. Therefore, applications have to be made in early 2025 if you plan to enroll in 2026.
Yes, it is a legal requirement that all students under the age of 18 need a guardian, who must be resident in the UK. They will be your child's local contact and will also help with school transport arrangements, liaising with the school, and providing after-school care if the pupil is unable to go home. PrepWorks can recommend trusted Guardianship services.
